Most tools in this category are calculation and schedule engines: give them the terms and they produce the numbers. That layer matters, but the schedule was rarely the hard part.
The judgment and documentation layer sits alongside it — deciding what the contract actually is, identifying embedded leases against the ASC 842 control criteria, documenting the discount rate (the rate implicit in the lease if readily determinable, otherwise the incremental borrowing rate, with a risk-free-rate election available to entities that are not public business entities), and drafting the classification memo and the disclosure. Gaapio focuses on that layer, with every conclusion cited to the Codification.
The two layers are complementary. Teams that run a lease subledger for schedules and journal entries generally keep it, and use a judgment-layer tool for the analysis and documentation around it.
